Product Information

"a weapon of ruthless efficiency; cold-blooded"

The Albatros D.III was the sesquiplane layout of its predecessor the D.I and D.II. Entering the war in January 1917 the Albatros D.III and later D.V and Va types became the back bone of Germany’s Fliegertruppen. The name Albatros derives from an Arabic word meaning "the diver." From the factory Albatros D.III types were powered by the Mercedes D IIIa 170hp engine it served in most of the early Jagdstaffeln (#1- 40) in large numbers. A year later the Albatros D.III and its license built types were still at the front though in ever decreasing numbers. Its main weakness was in the wing design that eventually had to be strengthened at the factory level. Even an up and coming Manfred von Richthofen won many of his early victories aboard the Albatros D.III. Yet he had a near inflight accident with a fractured wing. It was on 4 June 1917 that Ltn. Georg Simon is taken POW at 19.25 hours between Fontaine and Heniel near Arras, in Albatros D.III 2015/16.
