"Sopwith Triplane, a British fighter, was the first triplane over the front lines. It was an extremely well manoeuvrable fighter and was equipped with a single Vickers synchronised machine gun. The prototype was first time flown on May 25, 1916. The first of these popular aircraft entered front line service in the Summer of 1916, shocking the enemy pilots. This design inspired the German headquarters to ask German aircraft producers to develop a similar aircraft. The result of this request was the famous Fokker Dr.I. Triplanes were also used by France and Russia. The first Triplane, N 5486, arrived in Russia in May 1917, as a sample for the Russian Imperial Air Force. After the Bolshevik revolution, Triplanes served in Russia with the British expeditionary force as well as in Red Army service. Most aircraft were equipped with skies for winter service."
